Game Flop: Negative Reviews Pour In for Square Enix's Latest AI-Powered Game
The new free Square Enix AI Tech Preview is so poorly reviewed so far it's honestly unbelievable.

Square Enix's new AI Tech Preview, The Portopia Serial Murder Case just dropped on April 23rd and wow, the reviews for this game are really brutal. This game is a re-imagining of a 1983 visual novel game published by Enix.
People are not holding back with their criticism! One Steam reviewer even said it's "quite possibly the worst thing [they've] ever played." Ouch! And others are taking issue with Square Enix as a company, saying they keep producing trash like this game.
One major issue that keeps coming up is the game's use of AI. It's supposed to be cutting-edge technology, like ChatGPT, but reviewers are saying it doesn't even come close. Some people are having trouble getting the AI to understand their commands, and others are saying it's even worse than the text parsing of the original game from 40 years ago. That's not a good look.

It sounds like another big problem is the lack of features. Apparently, there are no quality-of-life or accessibility features that have become standard in the genre, making it difficult for some players to enjoy the game, especially those who may not be fast readers or who need to review previous text.
The game's presentation and English script are also getting some harsh criticism. The world consists of static background images and a big picture of your blinking assistant, which is not very immersive. And some people are having trouble even understanding what the NPCs are saying because of the use of illiteracies like "singular they."
Square Enix has just not been doing very well lately in the eyes of the gaming community. With their recent NFT-centric future and their latest critical AAA flop Forspoken, there is a bit of shakiness with their content as of late.
With the recent critical success of Octopath Traveler II, HD 2-D games might be their future.
